Are you thinking about starting a blog in 2020 but wondering:
Is Blogging Worth It? Or Is Blogging Dead Already?
Well, the short answer is NO, Blogging is not dead.
While it’s true that a lot of people prefer going on Youtube in search of answers to their questions, but there are also a lot of people who enjoy reading.
And as long as people will continue to read, blogging will live.
The answer is YES, blogging is definitely worth pursuing in 2020.
But, before you get started right away, there are some harsh truths you need to understand first.
For starters, blogging is not what it used to be.
It was quite simpler 10 years ago.
You just needed to produce enough content regularly to generate a decent amount of traffic and make money blogging.
Today, however, blogging has evolved a lot over the years. And a lot of old blogging practices are dead (I’ll later explain what practices you need to avoid. Just keep on reading).
Blogging itself, on the other hand, is far from dead.
In fact, the blogging industry is thriving right now.
The bottom line is, blogging is definitely still worth pursuing as long as you’re willing to work hard, invest time and energy consistently to produce high-quality content, and write on topics your readers care about.
In fact, I’ve posted a comprehensive guide on How to Start a Blog in 2020 for people like you who don’t know how or where to start.
Now, before you finally take the leap and start a blog, you need to first understand why do people blog in the first place.
The 3 most common reasons why do people blog are:
Blogging is a dream job for a lot of people.
In fact, it’s why the majority of people (myself included) start a blog in the first place.
The fact you get to become your own boss, work from your couch, or travel the world while earning passive income is what makes blogging so much fun than other professions.
You might have probably heard about many success stories of bloggers who are generating tens of thousands of dollars every month.
For instance, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, the founder and owner of Making Sense of Cents blog, consistently earns over $100,000 every MONTH!
And since the time she started her blog, she has earned over 5 Million dollars in total.
Though earning money like this may not be possible for everyone, but it’s definitely achievable if you put in a lot of work.
Plus, even if you don’t make 6-figures a month, blogging is still one of the best ways to bring in extra money on the side.
Apart from earning passive income, blogging is an incredible way to promote your existing business.
For example, Threadless is an online retailer that mostly sells T-shirts, art, home decor, and accessories.
And by regularly posting interesting and fun blog posts, Threadless attracts a lot of visitors, many of whom later turn into customers.
And this is just one example.
While these are just a few statistics about business blogging, but they clearly prove that blogging is indeed worth it in 2020 to grow your business.
The last common reason why do people blog is just for fun!
Yes, that’s right. A lot of people have started and are still blogging as a hobby.
For example, there are many bloggers who blog about their travels, some share great parenting advice, or simply what they did the entire day, the list is just endless.
Here’s one example:
This is a typical lifestyle blog where the blogger shares almost everything about his or her life including fitness routine, travel, diet, beauty tips, finance management, etc.
Just like her, you can also start a blog about anything you want.
Although, you shouldn’t expect any success from starting a lifestyle blog since it’s one of the old and already dead blogging practices (more on this later).
On the other hand, starting a lifestyle blog just for fun still has a lot of benefits.
For example, it helps to exercise your creative muscle, let out your thoughts, explore interesting ideas, make new friends, and even learn highly-valuable skills like SEO, social media engagement, writing, etc.
The point is, if you want to start a blog but don’t want to turn it into your next career path, you totally can!
And the best part is, starting a blog is not expensive at all.
In fact, if you’re serious about starting a blog, here’s a special discount link for you to purchase domain & web hosting from #1 hosting provider – BlueHost.
If you’ve made it this far and finally decided to launch your own blog, I want to congratulate you and wish you all the best for your blogging journey.
That being said, here are the 3 old blogging practices that are either dying or are already dead.
This is basically related to what we just discussed above.
Though you can most certainly start a lifestyle blog, but you should know that it’s not very popular nowadays, especially since the Youtube Vlogging kicked in.
You see, documenting and sharing your everyday life in written words is basically called entertainment content. And since the last few years, the majority of entertainment content has been moved to social media and Youtube.
This is mainly because people now go to social media platforms for entertaining content, while they go to blogs when they are looking for answers to their questions.
So, if you want to be a successful blogger, you probably shouldn’t start a lifestyle blog in 2020.
If you’re starting a blog to either promote your business or make passive income, then you must avoid using “Clickbait Headlines” when writing blog posts.
To give you an idea, here are a couple of clickbait headlines:
The main problem with this kind of headline is that it never satisfies user intent.
What is user intent? – In simplest terms, it’s basically “Why” a user clicks on your link from Google search results.
Now, if you’re really smart and creative, you might be able to get people to click on your clickbait headlines in the beginning. But, when you don’t consistently deliver on your promise, most users will just bounce from your blog.
As a result, this will ultimately increase the bounce rate of your blog, which signals Google that your blog is just garbage and Google will soon drop your rankings from its top search results!
So, instead of writing “Clickbait Headlines” that obviously no longer work, focus on writing headlines based on the real value that you’re going to deliver in your content.
It’s, in fact, one of the best ways to earn visitors’ trust and turn them into regular readers.
The last old blogging practice on the list is blogging about every topic you’re passionate about.
For example, you might be passionate about food, art, travel, and finance.
Now, you can most certainly write on all these 4 topics, but not on a single blog.
Following this old blogging practice will never help you become a thought leader in neither blogging niche, and most importantly, you’ll never be able to make your blog a success.
You see, people nowadays always look for specialists to help them solve a specific problem in their lives.
Besides this, you also want to avoid blogging about generic topics.
For example, let’s say that you’re starting a blog about home decor.
Now, there are already way too many experienced bloggers and media companies blogging about the same topic.
So, the chances of generating enough traffic to be able to monetize it effectively will be close to zero.
But, if you blog about an ultra-specific topic in the home decor niche, the probability of making your blog a success is much higher.
In the case of home decor, you can niche down to specific topics like paleo furniture or outdoor furniture instead of blogging about the generic topics.
This way, not only you’ll eliminate lots of competitors, but you’ll also be able to reach a very specific group of people.
This is something big media companies can never compete with.
And the best part is, you’ll be able to develop a personal connection that they can’t.
“Help Your Readers Solve Their Biggest Problems!”
Believe it or not, but this is the single best advice for all aspiring bloggers.
How much your blog helps your readers to solve their problems is what will make or break the success of your blog.
In simple words, the more you help your readers solve their biggest and most-intense problems, the more successful your blog will be.
As I explained earlier, people go to Google to look for answers and solutions. And if you can answer their questions or solve their problems the best way possible, you’ll earn a lot of loyal readers for life!
So, before starting a blog, think about all the topics you’re passionate about, identify a topic that you’re not just most passionate about, but also have a good amount of experience.
Once you’ve finalized a topic, invest lots and lots of time to learn more about that one topic. Take courses, watch Youtube videos, read books, do whatever you need to become an EXPERT on the topic.
This is the best advice to make a blog successful, especially when starting a blog in 2020.
So, is blogging worth it in 2020?
